THERE BUT NOT THERE is the name of an project to honour those killed in the First World War, reminiscent of the poppies at The Tower of London.
The concept, launched by the charity Remembered, is to take the names from the war memorials and put the soldiers back in the community using life size aluminium figures. There is one in St Pancras station for example. The idea has taken off and to meet demand there are now perspex seated figures suitable for churches with name plaques to accompany them.
There are 11 official World War One war graves in St Mary’s churchyard and there is a Cricket Club Memorial with a further 6 names on it. It would be wonderful to honour these men and bring their names alive either with perspex figures and/or name plaques. The figures cost £42 and the plaques £10.
